In 1972, I bought a used pentax and have been taking pictures since then.
Even if most of these pictures are totally uninteresting I still like some of them.
Some of these pictures can be seen in these pages.
Between 1972 and 1974 I lived in Jönköping in an old house (158) built in the beginning of
the century. The house had not been modernized since it was built, and had therefore been
abandoned by people with even a faint touch of ambition in the direction of respectability.
The remaining fraction of the population loved it. It had actually running (cold) water and
access to a toilet. What more could you ask for?
Many people passed through this house during
these years.
The most permanent neighbors were Suzy and Pilla. They moved in with their cat Pimmi.
They were young and they were wild and Pimmi was constantly harassing my cat.
When they partied they sometimes repainted their flat. One morning after a party
their kitchen was all red and white diagonal stripes (polkagrisrandigt).
June 1974, Bosse and I left for India. We hitch-hiked to Istanbul and continued with
buses and trains.
To travel in India changed
my perception and priorities in life.
Back from India I got married, raised a family and got divorced. All in a single glimpse of a moment that lasted a quarter of a century.
Late autumn 2003 I bought a Canon 300D and the old Pentax was retired. It hurts to see the old friend resting on a shelf like it was in some kind of museum, but I keep telling it that it can´t be beat by some electronic digital device, and that it is still one of my most precious items.
April 2004, almost exactly 30 years after my first departure for India, the time was right and I again left for India.
Life had come to a point where something had to be done.
This time the route overland through Iran and Afghanistan was unfortunately not an option, so I flew to Delhi.
I got a job in a school in a remote place about 100 km from Mumbai and for a while it seemed like I was going to stay in India indefinitely.
But the job didn't last, nor did my visa.
I stayed, however, long enough to realize that I had learnt nothing during the 30 years that had passed. But, as it seemed, neither had India.
