Fender Jazzmaster (1957-)
the Fender Jazzmaster was introduced in 1957 as a top of the line
instrument. Tom Wheeler writes: "the Jazzmaster was still another
well-thought-out Fender, an impressively cohesive design that marked
a significant turn from the stratocaster. Though its historical
significance and long-term commercial success were thoroughly
eclipsed by the Telecaster and Strat, it enjoyed a substantial
popularity through the surf music era of the early 1960s. /.../ The
earliest Jazzmasters had small pegheads, anodized aluminum
pickguards, black pickup covers, and chrome barrel knobs. The next
model, late 1959, also with a metal pickguard, had white pickup
covers and white plastic knobs. The tortoise-shell pickguard appeared
by 1960." In 1966 the Jazzmaster recieved neck binding, and 1967
block markers replaced the dots. The Jazzmaster is now manufactured
in Japan, and is based on the -60 -66 version.
